Literary bluesman Arthur Flowers stands, with his back to the camera, in front of a microphone, gesturing to a large wood-beamed room with many lights twinkling in the background. Written across the image in large text is, “Indian Summer Festival 10 Year Anniversary. Theme: River of Language. Save the date July 9 - 19 2019.”

River of Language

Every year, Indian Summer Festival works to an exciting and provocative theme. 2020 is going to be a big year for us – our 10th anniversary edition! For us, and for many of you who have supported us for a long time, it’s quite a landmark.

At this point we’d like to share with you that the 2020 festival theme will be “River of Language”. In true ISF style, we’ll be taking an expansive approach: looking at the importance of language to our species, the legacies of written and oral traditions from around the world, understanding languages as ecosystems, and exploring everything from the alphabet to computer code, graffiti, translations, calligraphy, language as power, sound installations, sign language, accents, musical notations, gibberish, haikus and hip-hop.

If there’s an artist or a project you think we should be looking out for, we want to hear from you!
