DINNER BY STARLIGHT

Indian Summer’s annual Dinner by Starlight gala fundraiser is one of the most anticipated events in Vancouver. This year’s Guest of Honour is renowned geostrategist and bestselling author Dr. Parag Khanna. The evening’s theme will be “The Future is Asian,” in honour of Dr. Khanna’s just-released book of the same name.

“Parag Khanna makes a powerful argument: the world can become smarter than the sum of its parts. We need to pay attention to his ideas.” – Eric Schmidt, Former CEO and Executive Chairman, Google

About the guest of honour: DR. PARAG KHANNA

Geostrategist, futurist and best-selling author Dr. Parag Khanna is a highly sought-after thinker, advising the world’s top companies, governments and institutions on their future maps. The New York Times describes him as ‘a foreign policy whiz kid’ and Esquire named him one of the “75 Most Influential People of the 21st Century.” Khanna is the founder of FutureMap, a data and scenario-based strategic advisory firm, and a best-selling author of six books. His TED talks have had millions of views. Dr. Khanna has been an adviser to the US National Intelligence Council’s Global Trends 2030 program, and is currently a CNN Global Contributor. As a Young Global Leader of the World Economic Forum, he has served on the WEF’s Global Future Council on Mobility, Global Agenda Council on Geoeconomics, and advisory board of its Future of Urban Development Initiative.

In his latest book Khanna argues that the 19th century, the world was Europeanized. In the 20th century, it was Americanized. Now, in the 21st century, the world is being Asianized. Far greater than just China, the new Asian system taking shape is a multi-civilizational order spanning Saudi Arabia to Japan, Russia to Australia, Turkey to Indonesia – linking five billion people through trade, finance, infrastructure, and diplomatic networks that together represent 40 percent of global GDP. Asia is rapidly returning to the centuries-old patterns of commerce, conflict, and cultural exchange that thrived long before European colonialism and American dominance. Asians will determine their own future – and as they collectively assert their interests around the world, they will determine ours as well. There is no more important region of the world for us to understand than Asia – and thus we cannot afford to keep getting Asia so wrong.

This is a rare chance to listen to a modern-day oracle and his predictions for the century that will no doubt be shaped by Asia.

In conversation with Stewart Beck, President & CEO, Asia Pacific Foundation, and former Canadian High Commissioner to India.
