Indian Summer Festival at the Vancouver Art Gallery

PRESENTING PARTNER

Indian Summer Festival collaborates once again with the Vancouver Art Gallery to present a day of special programming at the Gallery. ISF x VAG coincides with the major exhibition Moving Still: Performative Photography in India, now on view through September 2, which focuses on the photo-based practices of thirteen contemporary Indian artists. This full-day of programming is inspired by the exhibition’s themes of migration, gender, religion and national identity and includes dance performances, music, a keynote lecture and a curator’s tour.

12pm Dance/theatre by Arash Khakpour of The Biting School.
Arash Khakpour is a dance artist and choreographer. He is interested in dance as a language to research human conditions through historical, social, political and existential interpretations.

1pm Curator’s Tour: Diana Freundl with Sirish Rao
Join Diana Freundl, Associate Curator of Asian Art, Vancouver Art Gallery, for a tour of Moving Still: Performative Photography in India, with Sirish Rao, Artistic Director, Indian Summer Festival.

2pm Music – sitar and beats by Mohamed Assani and Anne Leader.
Mohamed Assani is an award-winning sitar player and an ambassador for his rich musical tradition. He brings the sitar to new audiences through innovative collaborations that have stretched the boundaries of his instrument. Anne Leader is a musician, composer and educator with an interest in musical instruments from around the world, and India in particular.

3pm Keynote Lecture: Sunil Gupta
Sunil Gupta is an artist, educator, curator and recent doctoral graduate of the University of Westminster’s School of Arts and Media. Throughout his practice, Gupta has consistently used photography to critically address issues of race, migration and queer identity. Since the 1970s, Gupta has explored the politics of homosexual experience through the lens of his own identity as an HIV-positive Indian man, living and working in both England and India.

Tickets for this lecture by artist Sunil Gupta are sold separately; however, Gallery admission is included in the ticket price. Get your tickets here today to reserve a seat!
