After leading Vancouver Opera for 17 years, James Wright retired from the company in June 2016. Under his leadership, the company was known for innovative productions and field-leading community programming. With VO’s board of directors and senior management, he undertook a bold, new direction for the company including an Opera Festival as part of its season in 2016/17, “redefining opera” for regional audiences and stronger collaborations with community and other arts organisations. Jim’s strengths include strategic planning, community engagement activities, and governance and general management experience. Previous to moving to Vancouver, he held senior leadership positions with the opera companies of Charlotte NC and Anchorage AK. He sits on the boards of directors of The Nature Conservancy of Canada-BC, and Global Partners Institute, and previously served on the boards of the Vancity Community Foundation and the TELUS Vancouver Community Board. He also was a member of the National Arts Centre’s Creation Fund advisory committee. Jim serves as a field consultant with Opera America and has recently facilitated meetings in New York City, St. Louis and Dallas, and is a mentor for Business for the Arts ArtsVest program. He is a birder and served as a volunteer on the Vancouver planning committee for the 27th International Ornithological Congress held in Vancouver in August 2018. Jim received the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012 for service to peers, community and to Canada.
