Orijit Sen

The Mischieveous Miniaturist

One of India’s most renowned graphic artists, Orijit Sen is considered the pioneer of the form in India. His book River of Stories presents an alternative view of India’s large dams and the impact they have on indigenous people and is considered the first graphic novel of India, which he self-published in 1994. His style is inspired by Mughal miniature painting and informed by the artist’s love of comics and his admiration for underground icons Art Spiegelman and Robert Crumb.

He is one of the founders of The Pao Collective of comic book artists. Founded in 2009, the collective aims to “support comics as a medium and a culture in India. His diverse works, which include public art works, have been exhibited in India, England, Russia, France, Japan, Canada, and various other countries.
