Volunteers

Things are ramping up pretty quickly as we prepare to launch our 13th Edition of Indian Summer Festival. We are looking forward to gathering again in-person at Granville Island, our festival hub. We are actively looking for volunteers who are 18 years old or above to help us with this year’s festival between July 6 and July 16, 2023 (on an ongoing basis)!

If you would like to support the Arts and Indian Summer Festival, we’d love to hear from you!

We have a number of different opportunities available. Here are some of the ways/roles in which you can support the Indian Summer Festival:

Hosts: You’ll be the first point of contact for guests and are effectively the face of the festival. Hosts are welcoming, friendly, and ready to meet new people! As a host, you may be positioned either inside or outside, at entrances, stairs, or other key areas. Hosts are prepared to answer questions about the venue, programming, and layout. This role typically requires a fair amount of standing, but a chair can be provided if standing is not accessible for you.

Ushers: You’ll work inside the venue to help with the seating of all guests, including those with mobility aids and those with special seating. Ushers work efficiently to ensure that everyone is in place as fast as possible and that venue-specific rules (e.g. no food/drink in the theatre) are followed. This role requires a fair amount of standing.

Box Office Assistant: Working in the box office involves selling tickets, distributing will-calls, monitoring the guest list, troubleshooting, and reconciling sales at the end of the shift. You must have a strong record of dedication, reliability, and a good aptitude toward Ipad based software (training provided).

Set-Up: You are responsible for all aspects of event set-up. This includes activities such as small-scale constructions, crafting, decor, unloading vehicles, furniture rearranging, and staple gun use. Set-up team members get a sense of satisfaction from working with a team to transform a space. Flexibility is an asset to this position. Lifting, carrying, and moving may be required. Some volunteers on Set-Up work in the weeks and days leading up to the festival.

Strike: You enjoy tearing down and wrapping up after events are over. You will work post-event to make sure all venues are free of posters, decor, garbage, and anything else. The strike team works in smaller groups of volunteers.

Security: You will work with partners to ensure the volunteer room is secure and well managed. Security volunteers are those that are highly responsible and trustworthy, as well as those that enjoy working in a quieter and more relaxed environment.

Floaters: You will work in all dimensions of the festival. Floaters are enthusiastic about variety and love to switch from task to task depending on the needs of the day. Tasks that are assigned to a floater include greeting, ushering, merchandise sales, communicating between staff, setting up, etc.

Merchandise Sales: You will support our artists by selling their books, CDs, and other products. In this role, you are responsible for taking payments and should be comfortable with cash and credit/debit card handling. Friendliness and an ability to remain calm in a busy booth are important qualities for this role.
